Blog

April 22nd, 2012

Now that www.michaeldadourian.com is responsive it can be accessed from any new tech device you are using.

My blogs over the years have been all over the place in that their was never a rhyme or reason for what I would publish and who my audience  was.  I normally drafted and published blog entries for me and that was the only consistent formula; I did not care either who I offended.  Eastern Michigan University may have been irresponsible for letting me earn a degree in language, literature and writing.

Honestly though, words can stir the soul and hopefully spark thought.  As I publish blog entries on the site please do not take everything I type as literal.  Just as a musician, a writer puts it out there for you the listener/reader to interpret.

My Blog at michaeldadourian.com will cover topics in health & wellness, diseases, fashion, nutrition, knitting, etc.  My goal for the site is to not set limits.

I left a career in the YMCA to pursue so many other things, thankful for the opportunity to have done so many different things and traveled to so many different places.  I can appreciate so many topics of life so my BLOG will cover life, not just mine.

I am pleased that we have guest bloggers on my site that will also be contributing on a consistent basis.

The search bar works well so if their is something you want to find on the site, test it out.  If their is something you are looking for and can’t find it please contact me.

If you would like to see any specific topic covered please let me know!

Welcome to my official blog, enjoy your stay and your day.

Best,

Michael Dadourian

Maxi Dress – Guest Blog Post

April 20th, 2012

I am thrilled that Michael Dadourian has asked me to guest blog for his website…I have known Michael for a long time and we fell out of touch over the years but we seem to reconnect through the wonders of the internet…

That being said, I am even more excited that he has asked me to write about my 2 favorite things:  Fashion & Beauty!

I don’t know where my personal excitement for both of these topics came from.  I am not any kind of “fashionista” and I just love makeup – sometimes I think I missed my calling in life when it comes to the makeup industry and pursuing that passion.

So the first topic I want to bring your attention to is Spring /Summer wear, particularly the maxi dress.

These days just because it is warm or hot outside, you’d typically associate less clothes or short dresses but that doesn’t seem to be the case!

LESS ISN’T ALWAYS MORE LADIES!!!

One of the hottest trends is the long dress that we now seem to refer to as the maxi dress.  I can’t speak for when the name change happened but when was the last time you’ve heard someone say “long dress”?

Long can be sexy and classy!  You can have your cleavage out or covered!  Your back could be exposed with a plunging drop in the back or it could be covered up.  Light, airy and flowy…can sometimes be mysterious with the length of the dress…the possibilities with the allure or modesty of this dress are endless!

Have you been watching NBC’s “Fashion Star” on Tuesday nights?  If so, you’ve seen Nikki Poulos – she started week 1 on a bang with her FABULOUS maxis she displayed.  Check her out at http://nikkipoulos.com/.

Regardless, maxi dresses are all the rage!  They come in all sorts of styles and prints, solid colors and patterns.  They can be casual or elegant depending on your personal styling, and the event or place you are wearing the dress too!

I’d also like to add this dress is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing a woman could ever own as well as easy to wear!  That means more bang for your hard earned dollars!  I am a bit of a clothes hoarder but I love my pieces that are fairly simple and or are easy to wear and those are the pieces I keep going back to especially when I can change the look of the outfit by accessorizing.

Accessories are essential in rockin’ your maxi dress, here is a list of items that you will likely have a few items from:

  • Flip flops (rubber or “fancy”) / sandals
  • Wedges
  • Long or short necklaces
  • Chunky cuff bracelets
  • Large statement rings
  • All kinds of earrings
  • Over-sized sunglasses are a MUST!!!!
  • Fedora
  • Panama hats
  • Over-sized floppy hat (J-Lo style) hat
  • Jean jackets
  • Clutches
  • Tote or hobo bags

From personal experience, you don’t need to spend a lot to “dress” your dress up!  You can get amazing steals at TJ Maxx, Ross, F21, Charlotte Russe and many other stores out there…those were just to name a few in the USA that are easily accessible coast to coast.

Ladies, please also keep in mind that maxi dresses are for everyBODY.  There are so many shapes and styles out there to accommodate YOUR shape and body type.  This is one piece of clothing that just works from all angles – accommodating all body types, price points, colors and styles and can be accessorized with a little or a lot!

Again ladies, less CAN be more with the maxi dress – keep in mind your own personal style and what you are wearing the dress for, and where you are wearing it to…

Healthy Lifestyle for Mesothelioma Patients: Exercise and Nutrition – Guest Blog Post

April 17th, 2012

This is a guest blog post by Faith Franz, a writer for the Mesothelioma Center. She combines her interests in whole-body health and medical research to educate the mesothelioma community about the newest developments in cancer care.

A body fighting cancer has different needs than a healthy body.

Nutrition becomes exponentially more important. And exercise – though sometimes difficult to do and to squeeze in when battling the side effects of some cancer treatments – should become a cornerstone of a recovery program.

Incorporating exercise and nutrition-based lifestyle changes to complement more traditional mesothelioma treatments gives someone the best chance at beating cancer.

Nutrition for Mesothelioma Patients

A whole foods-based diet – one that is light on process foods and rich in nutrients – can provide a number of benefits to someone with mesothelioma cancer. Whole grains, lean proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables should be staples of the diet.

Although cancer therapies are known to reduce appetite, someone with cancer needs to find ways to provide their body with enough calories to fight tumors. Calories mean energy, and energy makes exercise possible. Exercise also helps keep energy levels high for a longer period.

Calorie-dense foods, such as nut butters and dairy, can help patients meet their calorie quota, while juicing fresh fruits and vegetables into a light drink can provide a heavy dose of vitamins without the filling fiber of a whole food.

Vitamin intake is especially important at this time. Some studies have shown that beta carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C and calcium – among other nutrients – may boost the body’s cancer-fighting abilities. Mesothelioma patients can either obtain these vitamins and minerals through food sources such as broccoli and figs, or they can turn to a supplement for extra dietary assistance.

Exercise for Mesothelioma Patients

Even when symptoms make it difficult to remain physically active, patients should try to incorporate some forms of light exercise into their daily schedule.

Gentle ways to get the benefits of regular exercise include:

  • Casual Walks
  • Hatha Yoga
  • Swimming
  • Golfing

These activities can help get the blood flowing and the heart pumping. Done routinely, these forms of exercise can help mesothelioma patient stimulate their appetites, improve the quality of their sleep and release stress.

For more information on dietary and activity changes you can implement as part of your cancer-fighting routine, please see the American Cancer Society’s nutrition and physical activity guidelines for cancer treatment.
